In the ultimate age of consumerism, it might seem like you are constantly buying something, whether it be groceries, the latest gadgets, or new streaming services. It can feel especially overwhelming when the holidays begin, as you know it will be expensive. Even if you don’t spend a lot on each family member, it can be stressful trying to find the right item or beating the crowds during all the sales. If you and your family are looking more inward this year, now is a great time to give back.

Donating Old Items

Most parents typically have their children go over their stock of toys and whittle them down after the holidays. It helps to make room for everything they got and keep their toys from becoming unmanageable. But many people don’t realize that donating old toys and other items before the holidays is much better.

If you donate your old items before the holiday, this gives people the chance to find these toys before Christmas and making their children’s holiday even more special. So have your children go through their toys in November or early December, and give these items to a thrift store of your choice. They can be placed on the floor and bought from someone else in time to make a great, inexpensive Christmas gift for anyone who is struggling financially.

Donating Your Time

If you would rather put your boots to the ground more, than volunteering around the holidays is perfect! It’s a great way for your children to volunteer too, and see the world at large. Volunteering at a soup kitchen definitely gives back to your community. You can also volunteer at a food bank, which can work great if your children are a little younger. They can help you prepare meal kits and other goodies for the people coming in for food. Kids can see how easily giving up a few hours can make such a big impact for other individuals or families that are struggling this year.

If you have a little extra money leftover from shopping, consider buying toys or other gifts for local charities. Many orphanages and other homes for children ask for donations of new toys to give out each year, and you can help! Some places allow you to simply donate money, while others may take new items for the kids. Check local organizations around you for what they may be in need of.

Happy Holidays!
