Please note that laws and regulations may have changed since this update, so please note that it is always important to consult the most up-to-date legal resources and contact the New Jersey Department of Education or a local homeschooling organization for the latest information.

  • Required Documentation: Parents or legal guardians who wish to homeschool their children in New Jersey are required to submit an annual “Notice of Intent to Homeschool” to the superintendent of the local school district. The notice should include basic information about the child and the intended homeschooling program.
  • Qualifications: Parents or legal guardians must have a high school diploma or equivalent to homeschool their children. There are no specific teacher certification requirements.
  • Instruction: Homeschooling in New Jersey must provide “thorough and efficient” instruction in certain subjects, including language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and health and safety. The instruction should be equivalent to the instruction provided in public schools.
  • Attendance: Homeschooled students must receive at least 180 days of instruction each school year, with a minimum of four hours of instruction per day.
  • Testing and Evaluation: Homeschooled students in New Jersey are required to undergo a standardized test or portfolio assessment at the end of grades 3, 5, 8, and 11. The test or portfolio should cover the subjects mentioned above.
  • Supervision: The homeschooling program must be supervised by a “qualified person.” In most cases, this refers to the parent or legal guardian who is providing the instruction.
  • Special Education Services: Homeschooled students with disabilities may be eligible to receive special education services through the local school district. Parents should contact the district’s special education office to discuss available options.
  • Dual Enrollment: Homeschooled students in New Jersey may have the opportunity to participate in dual enrollment programs, which allow them to take courses at local colleges or universities while still in high school. The specific requirements and eligibility criteria may vary by institution.
