Dear Ask Angie: I am taking my 16 yr old out of public school for various reasons.  I am sending the notice of intent tomorrow to the superintendent. My question is where do I go to find the text books, etc. I will  need.  I am disabled and on a very limited income. help!

Nowadays the choices for homeschoolers are seemingly endless.  That is indeed a positive!  It can seem to be a daunting task to put together choices for your child, regardless of his age, and budgets are always an issue.

I would strongly encourage you to use the public library system, used book stores and online stores that specialize in free book swaps.

The important thing is to make sure you and your son are enjoying the journey of learning, as well as the thrill of attaining this gift of knowledge together.  This may or may not include books!  If you are able to go to museums (which are free admission) historic locations, factories, etc., you can enjoy wonderful learning experiences and lifetime memories!

Good luck,

Dear Ask Angie:

HELP!!!!!! I just took my children ages 9 and 6 out of public schools.  What do I do????  I don’t know if I am teaching them the right things.  Should I go out and buy expensive curriculums for them or just stick to what we are doing? How can I know if I am teaching them the right things?

Please Help!

Dear "Please Help"

Perhaps the greatest concern homeschool parents have is the content of what their children are learning.  Is the subject material being taught to the child age appropriate and thorough enough?  Is my child learning the appropriate materials for all subjects he/she is studying?  What is my child supposed to learn?

Each state has a set of standards established for each grade level.  This information is readily available regardless of whether or not you have a child attending public school.  I would encourage you to obtain the standards for your state, as well as a couple of other states, as a means of comparison.  It might also be of benefit for your children to participate in one of the numerous standardized test options available today.  These tests are administered by various organizations throughout the school year, with some such as the CAT test being administered by the individual parent.  These tests allow you a paper copy of your child’s areas of mastery, as well as challenge, across a variety of subjects, as compared to those of his/her peers, throughout the country.

Remember though, homeschooling is a fabulous journey filled with love, adventure, triumph and wonder.  By staying focused on only the last step, one can lose sight of each of the wonders along the way.  Take the time to enjoy the journey.  You may find that everything else just falls into place!

Good luck!

No Where to Turn:

I am so confused and I don't know where to turn. I started homeschooling my 15 yr old daughter this year and we were doing good she finally seemed interested in learning again.

Recently, my daughter was the victim of a neighborhood attack by another teen. In court,  I received a stern lecture from the judge about my choice to homeschool.

She lectured me about all the degrees she had and she wouldn't even think of homeschooling her children so how in the world was I qualified to teach my child and then she ordered me to re-enroll my daughter in public school or a home school program.

I did a lot of research before I took my daughter out of school in the first place, Mississippi law says I have to fill out a certificate of enrollment (which I did) it also says that I don't have to be certified and there is no set curriculum to teach and no testing is required. So I don't understand her reaction and I was hoping you could give me some advise on what I can do.

The school they made me enter my daughter in is in our neighborhood and the child who jumped her goes there also. To add insult to injury, the school didn't accept any credits attained while homeschooling and told me they were holding her back because they gave her all 0's for her homeschool grades.

Any advise will be greatly appreciated

Help us please!

Dear "Help us Please"

I would certainly appear as though you were heard by a judge with a very definite opinion about homeschoolers!

I would strongly encourage you to contact an attorney with respect to the ruling on this case. As homeschooling is legal in the United States the questions of legality, truancy and neglect come into play.  An attorney well versed in the jargan of the case would be able to address these issues and instruct you to the proper course with respect to your daughter.  HSLDA does offer legal assistance to all members.

You may also be able to attain the assistance from a civil rights attorney in your area as well.

With respect to umbrella schools, there are a number of distance programs regognized as umbrellas which are quite inexpensive.  Whichever program you choose will request a record of learning.  This "journal" provides the proper documentation for you to provide in order substantiate learning.

You can also demonstrate learning by administering a standardized test each term, such as the Terra Nova tests.  They offer a variety of testing methods and are also relatively inexpensive, yet offer not only a demonstration of further learning, but also a guide to you as to the strengths and weaknesses with respect to your daughter's learning.

Good luck!

Dear Lost,

Schools do require notification of intent to homeschool by a parent or guardian.   In fact, some states have or are attempting to implement a “waiting period” for homeschooling.  What is important to remember is that homeschooling is a nationally recognized, legal for of education for students, as well as a most viable option for parents and/or guardians.  With respect to your specific state, information regarding homeschooling protocols are required to be given to you upon verbal notification of intent to homeschool with the public school in which your daughter is enrolled.

Best of luck,

Angie!

Hi Angie,

We recently relocated to NC from Florida.  We are still registered as “Florida Homeschoolers”.   My daughter, needs to take the SAT’s.  I want to make sure that it’s ok for her to take them in NC.  I also need help finding a location for her to take them.We are in Stokes County.  I was also looking for a statewide organization that represents homeschoolers for NC.  In Florida, we have FPEA.  Florida Parent Educators Association.  Hope you can help me.

Thank you.

Sally

Dear Sally,

I would encourage you to look at the College Board website.  There you will find the answers to your questions, along with ways to register your daughter appropriately for the SAT exams.

Good luck!

Dear Angie,

Where do you obtain the standardized achievement test?

We are homeschooling for the first time this year.  My daughter is 13 years of age in grade 6, actually I am her great aunt and guardian.  She was going into middle school and in no way was she ready for the impact it has on her age group, the peer pressure, the emotional judgments that need to be made.  She had been in special education classes from grade 2 on since my mother, who was her adopted mother passed away in 2002.  We have had her since she turned 8 years of age.

She went through such emotional setback during the death of my mom which was preceded by my fathers death five years before.  In essence she was 8 and had lost two sets of parents, my moms death was very sudden and overnight her whole world was forever changed and she was in a new home.  She regressed back to a four or five year old emotionally.  It took years of therapy to get where we are now.

We home school and have a private tutor who works with her three days a week on language arts and math, we do social studies, science and health, reading and art appreciation, we have her in a homeschool group PE class that meets once a week and we are really having fun with it all.

I am an RN and work four days a week but my schedule is very flexible so I can spend a lot of time with her and my husband is semi retired and he helps with the social studies.

Dear Pat,

The loss of a loved one is one which leaves an indelible mark upon the soul and psyche of those left behind.  When the loss is suffered by a child, it is immeasurable.  How wonderful for this precious little girl to have such a loving family to help her through this most challenging time.

Standardized tests are available through a number of online sources, as well as through umbrella organizations in your area.  Be sure to choose a source which allows the best proctoring option for your child as well as evaluation of test and proctoring options.

Good luck!

Angie
